Sika, in collaboration with Muhr & Söhne GmbH & Co. KG, has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable packaging innovation. Their groundbreaking recyclable steel cartridges have been awarded the esteemed Worldstar Global Packaging Award. The awarding ceremony took place on June 15, 2024. This recognition follows the German Packaging Award 2023, highlighting the industry's shift towards eco-friendly solutions.

Contribution to circularity and CO2 reduction

The new steel cartridges represent a remarkable advancement in sustainable packaging, offering nearly 100% recyclability for cartridge packaging of silicones, acrylics, and various other adhesives and sealants. Utilizing bluemint® packaging steel with a higher proportion of scrap material, this solution significantly contributes to circularity and CO₂ reduction efforts.

It is the world’s first steel cartridge in standard dimensions, compatible with existing application equipment. The cartridge's magnetic properties allow for easy separation in waste streams, and it may be recycled without downcycling.

This innovative solution anticipates the requirements of new EU rules for sustainable packaging, which aim to make all packaging recyclable, reduce harmful substances, minimize unnecessary packaging, boost recycled content, and improve collection and recycling processes. Tests for the new sustainable packaging solution have been successful, with a full market introduction planned for January 2025.
