Sika Gains Market Share and Reduces Costs

In the first nine months of the business year Sika expanded its market share and reduced operating costs. In addition the company benefited from lower raw material prices in comparison with those of the previous year period. The decline in sales in local currencies slowed to 5.2% (half-year -6.3%). Sales decreased by 11.6% in Swiss francs to CHF 3 132.6 million. The operating profit of CHF 321.8 million before restructuring costs lay 18% (half-year -40.8%) below that of the previous year.

Sika Group posted net sales in 2008 of just over CHF 4.6 billion. The growth rate in local currencies amounted to 7.3%, including an acquisition effect of 1.4%. The negative currency exchange effect was -6.2%. Net sales in Swiss francs are thereby 1.1% above the previous year.

Market Share Gained
In the second half of the year under review income was higher than in the first half-year due primarily to improved sales and lower costs, especially for raw materials. Overall in the reporting year 2009 Sika achieved net sales of CHF 4.155 billion. Operating profit (EBIT) before restructuring amounted to CHF 400.6 million (9.6% of net sales, in 2008 9.1%) while net profit before restructuring totaled CHF 269.4 million (6.5% of net sales, in 2008 5.8%).

Sika grew in all Regions in the first half-year of 2010 in terms adjusted for exchange rates. In emerging markets, double-digit growth rates were achieved throughout. With material costs initially still low and those for personnel reduced, operating profit increased considerably. For the second half-year the company anticipates sustained growth with rising material costs.

Headquartered in St. Louis, MO, annual revenues for Greenstreak are approximately $30 million USD. Sika expects this acquisition will further strengthen its leadership position in the North American construction industry - particularly in the area of engineered waterproofing.

Sika increased sales by 14.3% in the first quarter of 2011, achieving net sales of CHF 1 021.2 million. In local currencies, Sika lifted sales by 24.7%. Sika benefited above all from the strong markets in Asia and Latin America and good results in the USA. The mild winter in 2011 compared to the previous year also had a positive impact.

Sika AG is acquiring Romanshorn-based plastic products manufacturer Biro Edwin Bischof AG. Biro produces injection-moulded parts for the European automotive industry on behalf of customers including Sika. The company generated sales of CHF 35 million in 2010 and employs approximately 150 people.
