Transparency around the Sustainability Performance of Chemical Companies and their Suppliers

Sika is member of the “Together for Sustainability” (TfS) initiative which aims to improve sustainability practices within chemical supply chains. Katherine Agapitos, Global Product Sustainability Manager at Sika, was appointed as Chair of TfS workstream 5 (WS5) which aims to develop a global solution for scope 3 GHG emissions in the chemical industry. Now, a significant milestone for TfS and the entire chemical industry has been reached with the publication of the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Guideline. The document enables chemical companies and suppliers to calculate product carbon footprints (PCFs) in a harmonized way. This is an important step to enable the decarbonization of chemical supply chains.

The new guideline was tested with the TfS member and supplier base, involving input from more than 50 companies, including Sika. Now, this PCF Guideline has been published and is available. The first version of the guideline focuses exclusively on specifications for supplier product carbon footprint (PCF) calculations within the chemical industry (chapter 5). The three additional chapters – “About the guidance” (chapter 2), “Reporting principles” (chapter 3) and “Guidance on scope 3.1 calculation on corporate level” (chapter 4) – will be published in November 2022.

"It is our vision to contribute to the sustainability performance of the entire chemical industry by engaging on the development of frameworks and tools that create transparency and decarbonise supply chains." Katherine Agapitos, Global Product Sustainability Manager

The PCF Guideline makes it easier to drive decarbonization in the supply chain and meet climate targets. It enables data transparency in terms of GHG emissions associated with purchased products. Suppliers will further benefit from increased efficiency in calculating PCFs due the harmonized calculation across the industry. High quality PCF data will also allow companies to improve their sustainability performance and reach their sustainability targets.

Together for Sustainability (TfS) aims to raise sustainability standards throughout the chemical industry. Members are chemical companies committed to making sustainability improvements within their own – and their suppliers’ – operations. The TfS framework allows member companies to assess the environmental, labor and human rights, ethical and sustainable procurement performance of their suppliers.
